Management schools need to Revamp their Compulsory Package
Management schools
need to Revamp their Compulsory Package
A lot has changed in the last two decades.
Our understanding of management has tremendously gone up. Technological developments
have overtaken many things including life changes and changes in the way corporations
function and people behave.
Gen Y is technologically very
proficient and knows many things. They need not be taught IT applications. If
any their teachers need to be taught about the technology. I have learnt many
things and continue to learn from my children and also my research Assistants.
Production and operations management
has become technology driven and change management is the order of the day. Respecting
experiences and managing the dynamism of the youth and creating a learning atmosphere
has become the necessity.
HR is not the business of HR people any
more it is the business of every one. Self management, Interpersonal competence,
small team management, small corporation management, entrepreneurship, creativity,
values management have become most essential features of managing work place.
Under these conditions “people Management”
has become critical besides the environment management (economic and other wise).
There is a great need to revamp management curricula.
Every management schools should revamp
their curricula to prepare future managers who are technologically driven, with
a drive to learn from multiple sources and using multiple methods including
e-learning, entrepreneurial in thinking and managing self, their surroundings,
their seniors etc.
I suggest the following to form
compulsory package besides what is taught today in terms of Organizational behaviour
and Human resources Management courses.
1.
Hurconomics or Economics of Human Resources: How to respect
people, talent and time and how each of them have an economic value
2.
Developing your own entrepreneurial talent
and entrepreneurial personality: This is necessary whether you are in
employment or self employment. Every corporation expects you to add value and
economic value addition and entrepreneurial thinking is the order of the day.
3.
Performance Management: how to plan
your life, future, performance this year, next quarter, every month and today
and tomorrow. How to make use of the PMS systems to make an impact and take
self and organizations forward
4.
Sources of learning and respecting
and suing these sources: 360 degree feedback and multiple sources of Learning,
people, readings, technology, experiences, failures, innovations, torus and
travels, magazines, media etc.
5.
Competency assessment and Personality
assessment methods, limitations and opportunities
6.
Creativity and creative thinking
I completely agree TV. Leadership courses have to be compulsory as leadership is hierarchy neutral.focus of Quantitative methods determine success in MBA courses and on qualitative learning its very limited. At the end of the day, we must produce level headed, grounded and emotionally sensitive management graduates.
